Oakland Voices and KALW Collaborate on Radio Stories

This is the second year Oakland Voices and KALW have collaborated on radio stories about East Oakland. The Oakland Voices correspondents pitch ideas and if they are accepted, work with KALW editors and producers to report the story – radio style. Last year’s stories won the Northern California Society of Professional Journalists’ prestigious community journalism award for radio.

It all started when Martin Reynolds, co-founder of Oakland Voices and co-executive director of the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, and Ben Trefny, news director at KALW, met at a California Endowment conference for its health journalism fellows. They discovered they were both working on projects in East Oakland and recognized the opportunity for collaboration.

Here’s a link to one of the three stories the OV correspondents did this year, a sensitive look at the neighborhood in the aftermath of the horrific Ghost Ship fire that killed 36 people in December.
