OAKLAND (CA) – Google News Lab will partner with the Maynard Institute to launch Maynard 200, the institute’s new program to train 200 journalism entrepreneurs, media leaders and storytellers of color within the next five years.

Google has awarded $100,000 to the institute to underwrite a 10-month pilot and will help the institute develop the curriculum. At least one training session will be hosted by Google at its Mountain View campus.

Google will provide product and engineering guidance, tools training, and staff who will serve as mentors and coaches to program participants.

“The Google News Lab is proud to support the Maynard Institute in developing the next generation of newsroom leaders of color,” said LaToya Drake, Partnerships Manager, Google News Lab. “Diverse talent is critical to opening up new perspectives on the most important issues of our time – and the Maynard 200 is a unique opportunity to meet the challenge.”

The Maynard Institute is working to bring additional partners to the program. Recruitment for the pilot will begin in the Fall of 2017 and training will commence the Spring of 2018.

“We seek to create a movement within journalism that will be felt through the impact of investing in emerging talent,” said institute co-directors Evelyn Hsu and Martin G. Reynolds. “In five decades of work, the Maynard Institute has trained thousands of journalists and media managers of color and we’re proud to be working with Google to train a new generation.”
