On this national Day of Giving, please join in supporting the Maynard Institute and our efforts to push for diversity and inclusion across journalism.
It has been a challenging and yet very exciting time for the institute as we come through a lengthy and robust strategic planning process.
We have wonderful progress to report:
We have forged a partnership with Google News Lab to support the creation of Maynard 200, a pilot that will enable us to test a new program that will train, mentor, seed and support the next generation of journalism leaders, entrepreneurs and storytellers.
Maynard 200 would not be possible without the generous support of the New Venture Fund, News Integrity Initiative, and the Craig Newmark Foundation, all of which have come together to support two pilots over the next 18 or so months.
We have received support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to pilot Cultural Competency for Communicators, which will employ the institute’s Fault Lines framework as a basis for curriculum to help journalism and communication educators better prepare students to navigate a culturally complex society.
We also have new leadership on our board, which will be announced soon, and we have new additions, in the form of consultants and hires that will help bring our vision to fruition.
The institute is also benefitted tremendously from the support of the Democracy Fund (a new funder) and the Ford Foundation (a long-time partner), which have both provided general support, along with other grants to cover the cost for additional strategic planning and communications consulting.
Lastly, we are continuing our Voices work, which supports community storytellers in Oakland to contribute to the narrative of their lives. We just seated our seventh cohort of diverse community correspondents who will write stories about East Oakland. Voices is supported by The California Endowment.
Much work is yet to be done, but we are moving forward in 2018 and beyond to push hard for diversity within journalism and need your support to keep our efforts going. Please give today!
We thank you!
