MIJE Leadership Team - Evelyn Hsu and Martin Reynolds

What a year!

Dear Friends of the Maynard Institute:

What a year it’s been.
We’ve raised funds to support two ambitious new programs:

Maynard 200: This is our effort to rebuild the media diversity pipeline by training at least 40 storytellers, media managers and entrepreneurs a year for five years. We start next year with a pilot supported by Google News Lab, the New Venture Fund, Craig Newmark and the News Integrity Initiative.

Cultural Competency for Communicators: Supported by a grant from the Knight Foundation, we will create a pilot series of e-learning modules and in-class exercises using Maynard’s Fault Lines framework as a basis to improve cultural competency and communication among journalism and mass communications students at colleges and universities.

Our Fault Lines workshops continue to be in high demand. We taught workshops at newsrooms including the Houston Chronicle, WDIV-TV in Detroit, the Center for Public Integrity, and at Gannett headquarters.

We are weeks away from completing the second phase of our strategic plan, an ambitious and feasible plan to grow the institute’s programs, staff and intellectual impact in the next three years.

We saw many of you at events we hosted at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in New Orleans and at the Online News Association convention in Washington, DC.

Through all the challenges of recent years, especially the loss of our beloved president Dori Maynard, our alumni and friends have supported and sustained us. As such, we plan to unveil a new “Maynard Family Funders” program in 2018. More details on that to come early next year.

We ask that you please consider helping us this year. To donate online please go here.
Checks can be mailed to the Maynard Institute at 2323 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94612.

Here’s to making a difference in 2018.

Sincerely,
Evelyn Hsu and Martin G. Reynolds
Co-Executive Directors
