Associate or Full Professor — Investigative Reporting — Graduate School of Journalism

Expected Start Date: January 1, 2020

This is a full-time, tenured appointment.

The Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, seeks applications from candidates to lead its Investigative Reporting Program and hold the Reva and David Logan Distinguished Professor in Investigative Reporting Endowed Chair. The successful candidate would be eligible to be appointed at the level of associate or full professor.

The ideal candidate for this position is a veteran journalist with a distinguished record in high-impact investigative reporting, as writer, editor or producer and as team-leader. Experience across various media–e.g. film, photography, digital packages, long-form writing–is a plus, as is evidence of successful teaching, mentoring and managing in professional or academic settings. The professorship will include teaching and executive responsibility for the Investigative Reporting Program. It is expected that the IRP will continue to direct its energies toward producing high-quality projects and placing them for wide distribution in both print and documentary outlets. New leadership will come with ideas and aspirations that we look forward to hearing about.

The Investigative Reporting Program was established in 2006 by veteran journalist Lowell Bergman, who currently holds the Logan Chair. It has evolved from a single seminar to encompass a nonprofit newsroom, an annual conference and a post-graduate fellowship program. Through its various projects, students have opportunities to gain practical experience in developing major stories for some of the nation’s foremost print and broadcast outlets. The IRP also works closely with master’s students in the Journalism School to develop and publish their own investigative projects.

The IRP has been dependent on a steady inflow of philanthropic funds, and the successful candidate should be prepared to coordinate with the School’s development arm in identifying, approaching and securing funds. Experience in fundraising would be a plus.
